Lumen: The First device to hack your metabolism!

Lumen + 6 months of personalized nutrition via the Lumen app is included with your program enrollment.

Unlock Your Metabolism

The CO2 concentration is measured using a unique breath maneuver, which is performed by inhaling a fixed volume of air through the Lumen device (dynamic to each individual), holding it for 10 seconds, and exhaling fully.

Metabolic Flexibility

With Lumen’s daily insights to your personal metabolism, you’ll improve your metabolism by increasing your metabolic flexibility which is how easily and efficiently your body can switch from carb burn to fat burn.

Scientifically validated & Peer-reviewed

Peer-reviewed research evaluating Lumen validated that it matches the gold standard of measuring metabolism.

FAQ

While there are many dietary solutions on the market, very few can provide a customized personal intervention based on accurate metabolic monitoring done in real-time and in an accessible, user-friendly, and affordable way.

People often ask us if Lumen is a ketogenic diet. The short answer is no. Lumen’s nutrition plan is not based on a ketogenic diet but rather focuses on metabolic flexibility by recommending varying days of low, medium, and high carb intake. This article will give you everything you need to know about lumen and low carb/ketogenic diet.

Lumen uses patented algorithms, CO2 sensors, flow meters, barometric pressure, and temperature sensing technology to determine the carbon dioxide concentration in a single breath. This concentration indicates the type of fuel your body is using for energy. Lumen can calculate a metric (lumen level) directly comparable to that of gold standard RER measurement equipment. Extracting RER by measuring the concentration of CO2 in the breath is Lumen’s core innovation. Over the past years, our team of scientists and engineers has been working to develop and validate Lumen’s science at top universities and hospitals worldwide.

Moreover, although we all exhale CO2, we do not all exhale the same amount of CO2 – each of us has a unique CO2 range (CO2/total air ratio). In the initial stages of using Lumen, the device will learn your personal CO2 range to provide personalized, highly accurate results.

Your Flex Score indicates how flexible your metabolism is. Metabolic flexibility represents the ability to easily switch between utilizing carbs and fats as a source of energy, depending on the availability of these fuel sources. Read on if you’d like to learn how to interpret your Flex Score.

Lumen levels provide you with insight into your current metabolic state. Lumen uses a range of 5 levels to indicate whether your body is burning mostly fats, carbs, or a combination of the two for energy. A Lumen level of 1 or 2 indicates that your body mainly uses fat for energy. Levels 4 or 5 mean that your body primarily burns carbs for fuel. Level 3 means that your body is using carbs and fats relatively equally.

Level 1 – Burning fat for energy ( more than 84% fat)
Level 2 – Burning mostly fat for energy (63%-84% fat)
Level 3 – Burning both fats and carbs for energy ( 42%-63% fat)
Level 4 – Burning mostly carbs for energy ( 60%-80% carbs)
Level 5 – Burning carbs for energy ( More than 80% carbs)

Lumen improves your metabolic flexibility so you can burn carbs and fat for energy and reach your weight goals sustainably and healthily. However, getting higher lumen levels in the morning or other measurements does not necessarily mean you are not on the right track. Weight loss is directly related to your daily caloric balance (calories consumed minus calories used), not your metabolic state. While Lumen’s approach to weight loss focuses on helping your metabolism easily shift from carb to fat use, it doesn’t mean that this is necessary to lose weight.

Metabolic flexibility is the ability to easily switch between utilizing carbs and fats as a source of energy, depending on the availability of these fuel sources. Today, we know that Metabolic flexibility is the leading player behind health, weight loss, energy, and performance.

Lumen measures carbon dioxide concentration in the exhaled air to measure carb or fat burn, while a ketone breath analyzer measures acetone to measure ketosis. Reaching a state of ketosis requires a very limited carb intake or a considerable period of no food intake (fasting). Measuring acetone through the breath can indicate the intensity of fat burn, however, it can’t tell if the body is burning carbs.

Unlike ketone breath analyzers, Lumen will tell you if your body is burning fat regardless of if your body started to produce ketone bodies. You will also be able to see the level of carbohydrate usage that your body is using to produce energy.

Since acetone and Lumen levels are based on different metrics that showcase different things, they cannot be compared directly. It’s important to reiterate that Lumen doesn’t measure ketone bodies and can, therefore, not indicate if you are in a state of ketosis.
